Traditionally, shawarma is cooked on a stack with marinated meats such as, lamb, beef or chicken. But today we’re going to turn this tasty street food into a midweek or weekend meal! With my homemade spice I’ll guarantee you that this chicken shawarma will knock your socks off. It’s seasoned well and if marinate if even longer the chicken will absorb all those beautiful flavors and you have yourself a finger licking meal.

I served my shawarma with my Homemade Flatbread w/ Yoghurt and this easy recipe is definitely worth to give it a go! It holds the chicken and other ingredients well together and paired with my homemade garlic sauce, you’re in a for a real treat! Chicken Shawarma w/ a Homemade Spice Blend & Garlic Sauce!

Ingredients

NOTE: this recipes makes 4 portions.

- 2 chicken fillets / 4 chicken thigh fillets (cut into strips)
- 2 tbsp Shoarma spices (see below)
- 3 tbsp olive / sunflower oil
- salt to taste

Shawarma spices:
- 1 tbsp cumin powder
- 1 tbsp coriander powder
- 1 tbsp garlic powder
- 1 tbsp ginger powder
- ½ tbsp Pimenton (smoked paprika powder)
- ½ tsp cloves (crushed)
- ½ tsp turmeric powder
- ½ tsp chili flakes (optional)
- ½ tsp cinnamon powder

For the garlic sauce:
- 4 tbsp yogurt
- 2 tbsp mayonnaise
- 1 garlic (grated)
- a little lemon juice
- salt & pepper to taste

For garnish:
- cucumber (cut into cubes)
- tomato (cut into cubes)
- salad mix
- red onion (finely chopped)
- pita or my Homemade Flatbread w/ Yoghurt (Easy Recipe!)

Instructions

  1. Mix the ingredients for the shawarma seasoning in a bowl and set this aside.

  2. Cut the chicken into strips and mix with 2 tbsp shawarma spices, 1 tbsp oil and salt to taste. Let this marinate in the refrigerator for half an hour or more.

  3. While the chicken is marinating, you can prepare your raw vegetables and garlic sauce. Cut the cucumber and tomato into slices / cubes. Then add some finely chopped onion and season with salt & pepper or a salad dressing. For the garlic sauce, mix all ingredients in a bowl and season with salt & pepper.

  4. When the chicken has marinated, heat 2 tbsp oil in a pan and stir-fry the chicken shawarma for 10 minutes, until cooked through.

  5. Meanwhile, toast the pita bread according to the instructions on the package or make my Homemade Flatbread w/ Yoghurt (Easy Recipe!). Then divide the lettuce, cucumber, tomato, onion mix and the garlic sauce over bowls. Put the chicken shawarma on the table and let everyone fill their own pita or flatbread. Enjoy your meal!
